A family DVD stops copying on Windows. What should you write down?
If Windows starts copying a home-recorded DVD and then stops, three details can help you choose a next step or explain the problem to support.
First, write down what Windows actually did. Did the disc appear in File Explorer? Could you see filenames? Did copying stop after it had already transferred some files? Copy the exact error wording, if there was one. A disc that never appeared and a file that stopped halfway are different starting points.
Next, note the setup. Were you using a Windows 10 or 11 PC and an internal or USB DVD drive? If you already know another disc works in that drive, note that too. Keep any copy you already made, even if it contains only part of the recording.
Finally, write down what you want back. For example, “Windows lists the files. Copying stops partway through the birthday recording. I want to see whether the last few minutes are readable.” That is enough detail to ask for help without sending anyone the recording.
If the DVD is cracked or warped, leave it out of the drive. For an intact home-recorded disc and a compatible drive, the free Heirvo preview for Windows lets you try a scan and see what your drive can read. Results depend on the disc and drive. Scanning and previewing are free. Paid licenses are awaiting store approval.
